The Covid-19 Pandemic :

The world has been hard hit by this unknown virus since March 2020.

Lockdown followed which had its pros and cons for our country. Let us leave that in the
politicians’ hands.

More than 12,500 South Africans lost their lives with a population of 56 million people.

Condolences to those who lost loved ones.

For 3 months (May to July 2020), 42 hip / knee replacement cases were done during the
lockdown by my practice at Life Groenkloof Hospital when it was still permitted. My patients
had 0% Covid-19 related complications post-operatively.

Good News :

Level 2 (the opening of the provincial borders) was instituted on 18 August 2020.

The Way Forward :

Covid-19 will be with us for the next year or two (including the wear of face masks, social
distancing, and hand sanitising).

My practice at Life Groenkloof hospital would be changing gears to get back to our normal
level of services.

​

I will treat my patients in ward and theatre facilities graded Green, although the hospital will
have some Covid patients. This means that according to our experience during Lockdown
that if you tested Covid-19 negative pre-surgery (which is a necessity), your chances for
Covid related complications in your first 2-3 months post-operatively should be ≤ 1% (ours
is 0%).

The set up for admissions, visitors in the wards, consultations in my Practice will most
probably not change, at least not for the next year.
